About Cheddar Gorge and Caves
Every year people from all over the world visit Cheddar Gorge & Caves, one of Britain’s natural wonders.
Cheddar Gorge is the largest inland gorge in England. The awe-inspiring limestone cliff face stretches to a height of over 450ft.
Its origins date back over 300 million years to the Carboniferous Period. At this time, the Cheddar area was covered by a warm shallow sea, making it a tropical reef environment.
Cheddar Gorge is part of the Mendip Hills National Landscape partnership. It is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Super National Nature Reserve (SNNR) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). These designations ensure that the area is legally protected to conserve its landscape, habitats and species.
Cheddar Gorge is an international centre for caving and rock climbing. High Rock in Cheddar Gorge was first climbed by Sir Chris Bonington in 1965. The climbing route is named after the famous TV soap, Coronation Street.
